Nam Cat
Tien JSC is currently acquiring land on the opposite bank of the Dong
Nai river, to carry-out at least four activities:
- Diversification
away from cashew production, using native
hardwood, cocoa
and fruit trees: in at least for blocks to aid subsequent scientific
evaluation.
- Riparian
zone management including bamboo planting and accommodation
units (the view onto the Park is splendid).
- Village-scale
processing of cocoa beans and other agro-forestry products.
- A research
and development centre to evaluate of land use (as in 1) and developing
speciality skills in pest management. The latter also satisfies urgent
specific needs, including sustainable control of:
- wood and bamboo
insects,
- mosquitoes,
- cocoa
pests and
- invasive alien weeds.

To the east of the park, across the Dong Nai river, forest continues
to be cut down to plant crops such as cashew
- but is this the best use of the land?
- What
is certain is that cultivation up to the river bank encourages
soil erosion and is poor water-shed management (note the level
of silt in the river). This threatens the Tri An reservoir - which
is a major source of water for Ho Chi Minh City.
